One of the most famous streets in the USA, Telegraph Avenue is always bustling with eccentric and eclectic Berkeley activities and people. In fact, it was voted “the best place to people watch” by the San Francisco Chronicle. If you want a taste of the late 1960s/early 1970s counterculture, this is a must see. There are lively street performers, along with old (and young) hippies hawking tie-die clothing, pottery, and the like. The street is also filled with some of the best music stores in the country, along with great used clothing stores, excellent new and used bookstores, and a variety of restaurants and cafes, some of which double as popular music venues. Telegraph’s north end leads directly into UC Berkeley’s Sproul Plaza.
