California Memorial Stadium
Completed in 1923 and modeled after the Coliseum in Rome, this stadium on the U.C. Berkeley campus is dedicated to the Berkeley students, alumni, and other Californians who lost their lives in World War I. The total construction cost was $1.4 million, all of paid by fundraising and not with one cent of university or state funds. It opened for the first time at the 1923 “Big Game” (Cal versus Stanford). The game, which Cal won, 9-0, was attended by 73,000 fans, reported to have been the largest crowd up to that day to witness a football game in the West. Situated in Strawberry Canyon, and framed by pine trees of the Berkeley Hills to the east and panoramic views of the campus and San Francisco Bay to the west, it remains one the most picturesque settings in college athletics.
